It's holiday party season! Brook and I spend a lot of time both hosting and attending parties, so coming up with creative appetizers is a must! For me, there is nothing better than a well thought out, stylish cheese board. As decadent as that sounds, a perfect cheese board is quite simple to throw together using your favorite platter or cutting board and a few ingredients that you might already have on hand. Feel free to jazz it up a bit with chalkboard signs, seasonal accessories, fun serving pieces, etc.
I cannot wait to see what creations you come up with (please share you pictures with me on Instagram!!! @prepdish).
Tips for Assembling the Perfect Cheese Board
1) Cheese
Cheese is optional, but if using, I pick a variety of hard and soft cheeses (like the manchego and sharp cheddar pictured).
I also use a mix of cow, sheep & goat cheese. And don't forget the blue cheese (I'm a fan, so I usually throw some on there!).
2) Fruit
Try a combination of the following:
- Berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
- Figs
- Sliced apple or pear
- Grapes
- Dried fruit (apricots, figs, dates, cherries)
3) Veggies
Again, try a combination of the following:
- Cucumbers
- Bell pepper slices (great for color)
- Jicama
- Cherry tomatoes (no chopping required!)
- Carrots
- Broccoli & cauliflower
4) Meats
My favorites to compliment cheese are:
- Prosciutto
- Pepperoni
- Chorizo
- Salami
Or if I'm purchasing from a specialty shop, I'll ask the attendant for recommendations.
5) Crackers
These are optional and can be subbed with veggies. My favorite crackers are:Homemade almond crackers like these from Elana's Pantry (PS: rosemary is nice addition to these!)Cassava crackers (I find these in Puerto Rico and have seen more Cassava options pop up in Whole Foods.)Nut thins
6) Olives and/or cornichons
Tip: I like getting a variety of olives from the olive bar.
7) An all-fruit jam or homemade chutney
If you would like to make your own, here's a good base recipe to try.
Want to pair with the perfect wine?
Want the perfect wine to serve alongside your cheese board? I highly recommend checking out Dry Farm Wines! It's organically farmed, sugar free, lower in sulfites and free of toxic additives. It's also keto and paleo-friendly!
Perhaps most importantly, it tastes great and always leaves me feeling good the day after I drink it. If you give it a try, let me know what you think!
