What's the nutrition like for this Turkey Chorizo Meatball recipe?
This recipe strikes the perfect balance between flavor and nutrition. Mixing turkey with chorizo keeps things lighter while still delivering that bold, savory taste. Serving it over rice makes the meal more satisfying, and broccoli adds fiber and volume to round it all out. Here’s a closer look at some of the key ingredients in this dish:
Turkey
In addition to being a low-fat source of protein, turkey contains significant amounts of B vitamins, selenium, and zinc.
Pork
The chorizo in this recipe is a type of ground pork. Pork provides substantial amounts of thiamine, selenium, zinc, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, iron, and, of course, protein.
Broccoli
(Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc, Folate)
High in vitamin C, iron, calcium, and many other vitamins, broccoli offers a variety of health benefits. In addition to its vitamins, broccoli contains a chemical compound called sulforaphane, which may help lower blood sugar, prevent cancer, and prevent osteoarthritis.
White Rice
White rice is a versatile source of energy, providing easily digestible carbohydrates that help fuel your body throughout the day. While lower in fiber than whole grains, it’s often enriched with essential nutrients like folate, iron, and B vitamins, making it a balanced option when paired with protein and vegetables.
Avocado Mayo (Oleic Acid, Lutein, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Antioxidants)
This recipe calls for avocado mayo, the main ingredient of which is avocado oil. Avocado oil provides substantial amounts of oleic acid, a quite healthy type of fatty acid believed to be very good for your heart. In addition, avocado oil's Vitamin A and Vitamin E make it good for your skin. Its lutein content supports good eye health. Finally, extracts from avocado oil may help combat arthritis.
FAQs
Is this Turkey Chorizo Meatball Recipe freezer-friendly?
Yes! Homemade meatballs are one of my favorite freezer staples. They're super convenient for quick lunches and make an easy dinner.
You can freeze them either raw or fully cooked—both work well! Just be sure to flash freeze first: arrange the meatballs in a single layer on a plate or baking sheet and freeze until solid. Then transfer to a freezer-safe container or bag. This keeps them from sticking together and helps prevent freezer burn.
When you're ready to use them, thaw overnight in the fridge—or if they’re already cooked, just reheat straight from the freezer!
What kind of meat is Chorizo?
Chorizo is a boldly seasoned sausage, usually made from pork and known for its rich, smoky flavor. There are two main types: Mexican chorizo, which is raw and sold ground, and Spanish chorizo, which is cured and sold in links. This recipe calls for Mexican chorizo for its fresh texture and spicy kick.
Are there any swaps or subs for this recipe?
This recipe is super easy to customize! Prefer brown rice or cauliflower rice? Go for it. Not a fan of broccoli? Try using some zucchini or green beans. And if you're out of sour cream for the creamy salsa, Greek yogurt makes a great substitute.
